As a landmark oil‑and‑gas project in the Middle East, this program features extremely high pre‑qualification thresholds. Multiple international steel mills failed the qualification due to insufficient DWTT temperature performance and stringent requirements for HIC and SSCC resistance. Targeting the local high‑temperature soil, alternating stress and field construction conditions in Abu Dhabi, the technical team of Xiangtan Steel carried out dedicated R&D. Full‑process technologies including steelmaking, continuous casting and rolling were optimized to resolve multiple technical trade‑offs between high toughness and high strength. The products successfully passed rigorous full‑scope third‑party testing by the project owner, establishing Xiangtan Steel as a core steel supplier for this national‑level Middle Eastern energy pipeline initiative.
Ultra‑low control of harmful elements: Precision smelting for low‑carbon, low‑phosphorus and low‑sulfur composition with calibrated calcium‑sulfur ratio, minimizing impurity‑induced defects at source.
Exceptional steel cleanliness with an extremely low crack‑sensitivity coefficient, effectively mitigating cracking risks during pipeline welding and long‑term pressure‑bearing service.
Precision narrow‑range property control: Accurate carbon control while meeting high‑grade strength specifications. It requires an extremely narrow process operating window and poses substantial production challenges.
Outstanding ultra‑low‑temperature toughness: The assessed temperature for Drop‑Weight Tear Test (DWTT) is 15 °C lower than that of conventional line pipe steel. Its superior low‑temperature fracture resistance exceeds general industry standards, perfectly suiting local conditions of large day‑night temperature swings and low‑temperature winter construction in the Middle East.
