During initial material planning, the Malaysian FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) project was originally specified to purchase 100% European imported special heavy marine plates. Used in critical load-bearing structures for FPSO hulls and offshore platforms, this category of steel requires extra-large thickness, high strength, low-temperature high toughness, and superior resistance to lamellar tearing. Characterized by high global technical entry barriers, this segment had long been monopolized by European and American steelmakers.
However, the European procurement route presented two major pain points: long ocean shipping transit times resulting in exorbitant logistics costs, and significant risks related to quality traceability and delivery delays over long distances. After conducting detailed research and verifying Xiangtan’s integrated capabilities across R&D, production, NDT testing, and class certifications, the Malaysian client proactively initiated cooperation discussions.
Xiangtan rapidly assembled a cross-functional task force integrating sales, research, and production teams. Tailoring a specialized metallurgical process for Malaysia’s high-temperature, high-salt marine environment, cyclic wave loads, and deepwater low-temperature service conditions, Xiangtan successfully overcome key technical challenges in Crack Tip Opening Displacement (CTOD) fracture toughness and narrow-window mechanical property control.
The entire order was delivered on schedule. Upon project completion, the Malaysian client sent an official letter of appreciation to Xiangtan, expressing high recognition for Xiangtan’s technical expertise, product consistency, and comprehensive support services.
